School of Land and Environment Master of Animal Science

Master of Animal Science

The Melbourne School of Land and Environment at the University of Melbourne is proud to introduce you to its Master of Animal Science.

Climate change, water use efficiency of livestock systems, the growing public awareness of sustainability, the protection of biodiversity, the impact of biotechnology, animal welfare, and the role of animals as companions are important and complex issues that face society today.  Meeting these challenges requires sophisticated understanding of these issues and the processes involved in developing sustainable solutions.

The Master of Animal Science provides you with the opportunity to develop a full understanding of many of these issues by exploring the biology, management, ethical and moral issues encompassing care and use of animals as a resource in light of advances in human endeavour, and under a changing environment.  The masters programme will also allow you to specialise within one of three broad areas that focus on a range of animal species:

  • Animal nutrition and metabolism
  • Animal behaviour and welfare
  • Integrated animal systems analysis
The design of the taught-course component of the programme considers theoretical and practical applications of scientific, economic and societal information which enable you to provide leadership in a wide range of public and private sector organisations.  The taught-course programme is underpinned by a ‘real-world’ industry focussed research experience led by world-class research leaders in animal science.
